“But I trust in your unfailing love, my heart rejoices in your salvation.” Psalm 13:5
Something really cool happened to me this morning. This year, I’m reading the entire Bible via “The Bible in a Year” reading plan on the She Reads Truth App, and today, the reading was on Psalm 10-13. In this passage David, in affliction, pours out his soul before God. He thought God had forgotten him, had forgotten his promises to him, his covenant with him, and continues to ask God “how long” must he endure this suffering and despair.
Exactly two years ago to this day (January 18), I wrote in my Bible next to these verses, “how long until I can have a baby, Lord?” We were well over a year into our journey with infertility and I recall how defeated and hopeless I felt the day I wrote those words.
If you’re currently in a season of waiting and are feeling forgotten by God, I want to encourage you to not give up hope and remind you of these truths:
-
- God is sovereign over all the details of your life.
- He knows the number of hairs on your head (Matthew 10:30), the thoughts you think, when you sit and when you rise, and the days ahead (Psalm 139). Rest in the fact that God is in charge of your life and He cares deeply about what you’re going through – whether it be infertility or some other difficult season.
- God is faithful and His plans for you are good.
- As someone who struggles with anxiety, I have to constantly remind myself of this. I can easily get caught up in the waves of worry where fear takes over and before I know it, I’ve spiraled into a dark place. But when I choose to focus on God and His promises, I am filled with hope and a peace that surpasses all understanding.
- God’s timing and ways are better than ours.
- My godmother always encourages me to look at my “disappointments” as “divine appointments” with God. While I certainly would not have chosen to walk the path of infertility, Jesus met me in my suffering and produced a deep sense of contentment and thankfulness in me that I could have never achieved on my own. The experience will always be a part of me and I’m grateful for the way it has altered the values of my heart and taught me to “lean not on my own understanding, but in all my ways acknowledge Him so that He can lead my path straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)
- God is sovereign over all the details of your life.
Something practical you can do during your season of waiting is to recount the Lord’s faithfulness. When you remember how He has worked in your life before, it’s easier to lean in and trust Him when you can’t see the road ahead. I really love using my Val Marie Paper prayer journal and the “answered prayer” section for this. Take some time today to remember His goodness and lovingkindness towards you. And if you can’t recall a specific time in your life, read John 3:16. I hope that doing this will allow you to experience His peace and hope for your future, and you’ll be reminded of how He has been working out of love for you all along. 💗
