One of my favorite things to do on a Saturday is support our local farmer’s market. It is open year-round (what a blessing!) and offers some of the most gorgeous locally-grown produce. There are several options for pesticide free and organically grown vegetables, berries and flowers, as well as an array of poultry, pork, beef and eggs that are 100% free of antibiotics or hormones.
Over the last year, I’ve become an avid supporter and have enjoyed establishing relationships with many of the purveyors. It brightens my day talking with them and hearing their passion for the important and life-giving work they do. I’m also grateful to be able to put a face behind the food we’re consuming. A few of my favorites that I always seek out are:
- Ole McDonald Farm for fresh organic vegetables
- Crooked Row Farm for high-quality chicken and pork
- Schmoe Farms for the most beautiful and delicious eggs
- Full Earth Farm for their famous carrots
- New Green Organiks for leafy greens & microgreens
- Serenity Goats for raw goat cheese & yogurt
- Orchard Pond for honey, granola & pesto
Local food is fresher food and seasonal foods have higher nutritional density. I cannot recommend supporting your local farmer’s market enough!
While I am typically donning workout clothes and a baseball cap when I go to the farmer’s market, I always make sure to bring my own straw market tote because: 1. it’s cute, 2. it’s efficient for carrying all my goodies, and 3. it cuts down on waste. I’ve rounded up some of my favorites below along with a few more fun farmer’s market essentials:
